Heidsieck & Co Monopole Blue Top (on offer at £17 at Asda) The crisp, fresh though it's not worth £27.99 at Sainsbury's.
Ridgeview Marksman Brut (£22, Marks & Spencer; 12%), gorgeous, honeyed.
Cava Torre Oria Brut (£8.99, or £6.74 if you buy six, Oddbins; 12%) amazingly rich.
Jansz from Tasmania (£12.99 Oddbins; £12.95, slurp.co.uk; 12.2%), impressively champagne-like.
Lindauer Brut Rosé (£9.99, Oddbins; 2 @ £7.99 Majestic) flirty – it's more appealing than their standard brut.

MACON "TERROIR DE CHARNAY" 2009 Christophe Cordier (2 @ £9.99 Majestic) incredible concentration of citrus fruits and beautifully balanced oak.
BOURBOULENC 2009 Domaine de Simonet (£7.50, The Wine Society) deliciously citrusy aperitif - a great bargain at this price.
ARTERO MACABEO 2009 Bodegas Munoz (£5.99, Penicuik Wines) remarkably affordable quaffer with lemon and apricot flavours.
GREYWACKE SAUVIGNON BLANC 2010 (£14.99, Luvians, Peter Green, Woodwinters) beautifully judged ripe, limey Sauvignon.
THREE AMIGOS WHITE 2007 McHenry Hohnen (£12.99, Oddbins, £14.95, Berry Bros) Aromatic, textured and complex.
SYLVIA RESERVE SAUVIGNON BLANC 2010 Small & Small (£13.99, www.nakedwines.com) rich papaya notes and a restrained, crisp zesty palate.

Seigneurs d’Aiguilhe 2006 Côtes de Castillon, France (13.5%, Waitrose, £10.99). Merlot-based, it has softness and great charm.
Barnaut Grande Réserve Brut Grand Cru Bouzy NV (12.5%, £24.95, Lea & Sandeman) 100 per cent pinot noir and very evocative.
Gulfi Nerojbleo 2006 Italy (14%, Oddbins, £16.99/£12.74 in a mixed six) superb Sicilian red made from nero d’avola which is complex and unusual.
Pinot Grigio Frunza 2009 Romania (13%, Oddbins, £5.99/£4.49 in a mixed six) clean, easy and looks very smart.
Montgravet Chardonnay 2009 France (12%, Waitrose, £4.99) classy package; crisp with a melon-like texture.
Lammershoek Syrah Carignan Grenache 2007 (14.5%, Oddbins, £12.99/£9.74 in a mixed six) big, rich, oaked and juicy. It’s also lovely and is made from old vines.
Frantz Saumon Minerale 2009 Montlouis, France (13.5%, Vagabond Wines, £15.50) reminds me of the honeyed white tubes in a head of clover and quince.
Marques de Grinon Caliza 2006 Spain (14.5%, M&S 100 stores only, £9.99) modern, judiciously oaked blend of syrah and petit verdot.
